Prologue

Before the flood

The New World wasn't new, and it wasn't empty. We have no idea how many millions lived there, or for how many thousands of years they had called it home. All we know is that it wouldn't last.

Paradise regained

Discovery   1492-1607

The native Americans - be they Arawaks, Aztecs or Inca – hadn't known they were lost, but now they were found. And as far as the Spanish were concerned it was 'finders keepers'.

Building Jerusalem

Settlement   1607-1691

They came in their thousands, in their hundreds of thousands. To escape their old worlds and to build a better one. But their old worlds came with them.
